Are you interested in keeping bees Spring 2017?  Now's the time to start your adventure. This very popular class is an excellent introduction to beekeeping.  This class will cover all the essential topics for getting started! 

This lecture class is to be presented at the Ruhl Bee Supply store.  No protective gear is required.

Class Description:

This class will help you decide if you want to become a beekeeper, and will help prepare you to start keeping bees in the 2017 bee season.  The class normally runs between 3 and 4 hours, with additional time for questions.  The main areas covered are:

·         Honeybee basics:  (approx. 30 minutes)

o   anatomy

o   colony social structure

o    caste identification and roles

·         Natural hive management: (approx.30 minutes)

o   Understanding local forage cycles

o   Colony expansion and contraction cycles

o   Colony nutrition and health

·         Beehive basics: (approx. 60 minutes)

o   Langstroth hive

o   Kenya hive

o   Warre hive

o   Types of frames

o   Types of foundation

o   The beehive throughout the season

o   Basic equipment needed in beekeeping

·         Acquiring your bees (approx. 30 minutes)

o   Packages

o   Nucleus hives

o   Swarms

·         Taking care of your new bees (approx. 30 minutes)

·         Extra Q&A (30-60 minutes)

**Special Note: The class room space is upstairs.  If you're unable to use stairs, but would like to take the course, please contact us and we will schedule a class in an alternate location**   
Pre-registration is required.

Cancellation Policy: Cancellations made more than one week in advance of the class are eligible for in-store credit. Cancellations made later than one week prior to the class are not eligible for store credit.
